Come Jan. 1, 2022, power-assisted bicycle (PAB) and e-scooter riders in Singapore must pass an online theory test before they ride on roads and cycling paths.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said in a news release on June 14 that the test will improve awareness of "active mobility rules, code of conduct, and safe riding practices."
Multiple-choice questions
The test, which will be available for registration from June 30, will be different for the two types of motorised devices.
The e-scooter test comprises 30 multiple-choice questions, and candidates will have 30 minutes to complete them.
On the other hand, the PAB test comprises 40 multiple-choice questions, with individuals given 40 minutes to complete them.
The passing score is 80 per cent for both tests.
A digital certificate, with no expiry date, will be issued to those who pass.
A transition period of six months, from June 30 to December 31, 2021, will be provided for riders to prepare, take, and complete the test before enforcement kicks in.
From Jan 1, 2022, riders are required to show their digital certificates when requested by enforcement officers.
How and where to take the test
Both tests will be available on Singapore Polytechnic’s (SP) Professional & Adult Continuing Education (PACE) Academy in four languages.
To prepare for the test, you can access e-handbooks on LTA website, under the "Mandatory Theory Tests for Riders of E-scooters and Power-Assisted Bicycles" section.
Those who wish to take the test must be register for an account on the theory test portal using their SingPass at least one day in advance.
Candidates should be at least 16 years old.
Those who register for the test from June 30 - Sep. 30 are entitled to a discounted fee of S$5 per test, with a free reattempt if they fail on their first try.
Registering after Sep. 30 will cost you S$10 per attempt.
