Danish footballer Christian Eriksen has taken to social media with a photo of himself smiling from a hospital bed with a message for the fans.

"I'm fine — under the circumstances," he wrote on his Instagram.

The 29-year-old midfielder had collapsed on the pitch during the first half of Denmark's European Championship match against Finland.

According to The Guardian, Denmark's team doctor has confirmed that Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest.

"He was gone," said Morten Boesen, the team doctor.

"We started the resuscitation and we managed to do it. How close were we to losing him? I don’t know, but we got him back after one (defibrillation), so that’s quite fast."

Thanking the fans for their well wishes

Despite being in seemingly good spirits, Eriksen said that he still had examinations to go through in the hospital.

"But I feel okay," he added.

The Internazionale player acknowledged the fans for well-wishes, writing: "Big thanks for your sweet and amazing greetings and messages from all around the world. It means a lot to me and my family."

With Denmark set to play its next match against Belgium on Thursday evening (Friday 12am Singapore time), Eriksen also took time to spur this international team mates on.

"Now, I will cheer on the boys on the Denmark team in the next matches."

"Play for all of Denmark," he wrote.
