The Singapore Police Force (SPF) ordered 20 massage parlours to close for 10 days after they were found to have breached safe-distancing measures.
Police officers found either a masseuse or a customer not wearing masks at such establishments while enforcement checks were carried out, a press release by the SPF said.
The massage parlours were each fined S$1,000, while the customers were each fined S$300 for breaching safe-distancing measures.
According to the SPF, only customers who are using saunas, onsens or having a facial done may be exempted from wearing masks, while establishments must ensure that staff and clients are wearing masks at all other times, including during a massage.
Massage parlour operators who do not comply with safe distancing measures may be liable for a fine of up to S$10,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both, for the first offence.
Higher penalties of a fine of up to S$20,000, imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both, may apply for subsequent offences.
As for members of the public who breach such measures, they may be jailed for up to six months, fined up to S$10,000, or be subjected to both.
