To help hawkers tide through this period of no dining in, the National Environment Agency (NEA) will be introducing some financial relief.
Rental waivers and other support
Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Amy Khor announced that the agency will be waiving the rental fee for stall owners at hawker centres managed by NEA or NEA-appointed operators.
The stall rentals will be waived by half in May and June for around 6,000 cooked food stallholders.
Essentially, a month's stall rental will be waived, and this would amount to around S$5.5 million in total rental waivers.
Additionally, new cooked food stallholders with tenancies starting on June 1 this year will also get a half-month rental waiver.
As no dining in is allowed now, NEA will be subsiding 100 per cent of the fees for table-cleaning and centralised dishwashing services for the duration of this period.
This would add up to around S$3.3 million in subsidies.
Khor urged everyone to continue to support Singapore's hawkers, as well as to comply with safe management measures.
She noted that people could bring out their reusables to avoid the use of disposable takeaway containers when purchasing food.
