Malaysia's Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced a nationwide Movement Control Order (MCO) on May 10, after a recent spike in Covid-19 cases in the country, according to Reuters.
This will begin on May 12 and last until June 7. Social gatherings will be banned, and educational institutes will be shut, but "economic sectors" will be allowed to continue.
Dining in restaurants and food stalls will not be allowed, but they can continue to operate takeaway businesses, according to a Facebook post by Muhyiddin.
Surge in cases
The country recorded 3,807 new cases on May 10 over the past 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 444,484 with 37,396 active cases, according to the Malay Mail.
The effective lockdown comes just days before the Muslim holiday of Hari Raya Puasa.
Previously on Saturday (May 8), Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said there were no plans to implement a nationwide MCO. Instead, targeted movement restrictions would be used, reported CNA.
On May 9, The Straits Times reported that Malaysia banned all inter-district and interstate travel from May 10 to June 6.
