Singapore was once dubbed the lightning capital of the world, and on May 8, residents of the Little Red Dot were shown why.
Images posted on to the Nature Society (Singapore) page by Facebook user Brent Folan captured the awe-inducing scenes of a storm rolling in during sunset.
Speaking to Mothership, Folan said that the videos and photos were taken on his iPhone between 7 and 7:30pm in Eunos.
Lightning capital of the world
In the past, reports have indicated that Singapore has anywhere between 171 and 186 lightning days on average a year.
Each square kilometer of land in Singapore can be struck up to 16 times annually.
April, May and November are the most lightning-prone months as a result of the intense inter-monsoon conditions.
This makes us effectively one of the lightning capitals of the world.
However, lightning strikes can be fatal and cause critical injury; so the outdoors are no place to be during a thunderstorm.
Thankfully, more often than not, Singapore — with its many shelters and indoor spaces — is generally well-protected from lightning.
