As of May 13, the Changi Airport Covid-19 cluster has reached 46 cases.
Minister for Transport Ong Ye Kung announced today (May 14) during a press conference that the government has identified a possible location where the virus was spread: the food court in Basement 2 of Terminal 3.
The minister said that Changi Airport has plotted the first 20 over infections, and found that most of the infections were centred around one zone.
This zone received arrivals from countries with higher risk, said Ong, including those from South Asia. Workers from that zone went to have their meals at the commercial areas and outlets at Terminal 3 Basement 2.
"And we suspect from there, it transmitted to members of public that visited the place," Ong said.
The basement was subsequently closed for cleaning.
The airport also embarked on a special testing operations on its staff.
Ong said that as of May 14, 7,641 staff have been tested. Nearly 6,000 results are out, and out of them, six were positive for Covid-19.
S'pore's aviation industry now serving less than 3% of pre-Covid-19 traffic
As it is, the aviation industry is now serving less than three per cent of its pre-Covid-19 traffic, maintaining "bare bones" services to keep Singapore connected to the world.
The aviation industry has been decimated by Covid-19, said Ong, who praised airport frontline workers for "risking their own safety, day in day out, for the past 16 months [...]."
Most of the air traffic today serves families of Singaporeans and PRs, investors, workers and students flying overseas, key officials, and businessmen, said Ong.
