A son creatively put together a homemade hearing aid for his mother, who lives in Tanjong Pagar GRC.

Chan Chun Sing, Trade and Industry Minister and Tanjong Pagar Member of Parliament (MP), took to Facebook to share how he got to know about this while on a block visit.

Homemade hearing aid

In a post dated Feb. 7, he shared more about his encounter with an elderly woman who had a homemade hearing aid, which her "loving son" created for her.

He included a photo of the hearing aid, which took the form of wooden cubes with earphones attached. There appeared to be at least two versions of the homemade device, with one version (with black earphones) being worn by the resident while another version (with green earphones and a silver dial) was shown to her visitors.

The mother was "full of pride when talking about her son, who is an engineer," said Chan, adding that she could "rightfully" take pride in what her son had achieved.

Commenters on Chan's post commended the son for his innovativeness, pointing out that he likely helped his mother save significant costs, as commercially-available hearing aids could be expensive.

"Engineering as a career"

Chan ended his post with a mention of "engineering as a career" along with a "flexed biceps" emoji (💪).

Precision engineering, specifically, is one of the sectors that has seen growth in the midst of the ongoing recession.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry said last October that the manufacturing sector's two per cent year-on-year growth in the third quarter of 2020 had been supported by an expansion in output in electronics and precision enginering.

This was driven by robust global demand for semiconductors and semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
