Law and home affairs minister K Shanmugam said in a doorstop interview on Sep. 16, 2020 that he will give a ministerial statement on the Parti Liyani case.
Prior to this, Shanmugam said that he will be answering to the questions posed by Straits Times' opinion editor, Chua Mui Hoong, once internal reviews are completed.
Welcomes discussion on Parti Liyani case in Parliament
In response to a question during the doorstop, Shanmugam said that he had been receiving notices of various questions that have been filed by Member of Parliaments (MP) on the Parti Liyani case.
According to Shanmugam, several PAP Members have also filed questions on the Parti Liyani case, and the way in which it has been handled.
He continued,
"Obviously, MPs are interested. Now, WP has also filed a motion. I think it is good. Both sides, PAP MPs and WP MPs appear to be very interested. It will be good to have it discussed in Parliament openly, set out what happened and deal with questions."
MPs Vikram Nair, Tan Wu Meng and Murali Pillai shared on Facebook that they have filed questions to ask for updates on the internal reviews on the process that led up to what happened to Liyani and what will be done to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
WP's Sylvia Lim filed a motion
Workers' Party (WP) MP Sylvia Lim had also filed a motion on the criminal justice system.
In WP's statement, the party said that they intended to "discuss aspects of the criminal justice system and the challenges faced by persons of less means in navigating it,"
They added that it would also put forward "specific suggestions to improve the system."
A discussion on the "deeper issues" raised by the recent case of Parti Liyani can be expected when Parliament sits in October.
