Much is known about the public life of former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, but less so about the veteran politician's personal life.
Mahathir commemorates 64 years of marriage with wife
The 95-year-old shared some affectionate photos of himself and his wife, Siti Hasmah Ali, on Wednesday, Aug. 5, commemorating their 64th wedding anniversary.
However, he added that it was worth commemorating the special occasion, after 64 years of "tolerance for each other and other feelings".
Mahathir first met his future wife while they were both studying at the King Edward VII College of Medicine, which is known today as National University of Singapore (NUS).
Their eldest daughter, Marina Mahathir, shared a Facebook post congratulating her parents on "(surviving) 64 years of marriage".
Seven children, two prime-ministerships
The couple have seven children.
They have four biological children: One girl and three boys — Marina, Mirzan, Mokhzani and Mukhriz.
They also adopted three children -- Melinda, Mazhar and Maizura.
Mahathir's first tenure as prime minister was from 1981 to 2003, becoming Malaysia's longest-serving prime minister.
However, the Malaysian political crisis early in February 2020 saw the resignation of the two-time prime minister and the appointment of Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin as the eighth prime minister of Malaysia.
After Muhyiddin was sworn in on Mar. 1, 2020, Mahathir was embraced by his wife after he gave a defiant speech to the media.
While he appeared to jokingly shrug off the advances of his wife who approached with a bear hug, he caved in the end in full view of the media and bystanders in the room.
While Mahathir appeared stern in speech during the press conference, his demeanour softened in front of his wife.
