Largely known as the epicentre for anime, video games and tech enthusiasts in the world, Akihabara in Japan has been experiencing a steep decline in business and tourism since the Covid-19 pandemic struck countries all over the world.
SEGA Building No. 2 to close on Aug. 30
The impact might have led to the closure of SEGA's Building No. 2, one of the iconic buildings that make up the tech district in Tokyo.
The news of the arcade building's closure spread after visitors saw a sign placed inside the building, announcing the impending closure of the store on Aug. 30, 2020.
The notice says, as translated by Soranews24:
"Notice of Closure
Thank you for your continued patronage.
We are sorry to announce that this branch, Sega Akihabara Building 2, will be closing.
Our last day of operations will be Sunday, August 30.
The entire staff wishes to express, from the bottom of our hearts, our sincere gratitude at the loving support you have given our establishment for so many years."
Fans saddened by closure
The building was first opened by SEGA in Oct. 2003, and is known as "Akihabara GiGo". The company has not issued a statement regarding the closure of the building.
While it is unclear what the reason for the building's closure is, the district has been feeling the impact of the pandemic's hit on tourism in the country, as it has been thriving largely on international tourists.
A number of online users shared old photos of the SEGA building during their visits.
While SEGA's Building No. 2 will be closing soon, it is not the only store SEGA manages in the district.
Four SEGA stores will continue to operate in the district.
