In the constituency political broadcast aired on Tuesday evening, July 7, four members from the People's Action Party (PAP) gave a series of speeches that addressed voters in the Sengkang GRC that they are contesting in.
They are Ng Chee Meng, Amrin Amin, Raymond Lye and Lam Pin Min.
Five other constituencies participated in Tuesday's broadcasts as well. They are Pioneer SMC, Potong Pasir SMC, Punggol West SMC, Radin Mas SMC and Sembawang GRC.
The candidates mainly stuck to two main themes, which are
1. the promise to provide security in residents' livelihoods amid the uncertainties presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as
2. the new facilities to be built should they be voted in.
1. Security amid Covid-19 threat
Ng Chee Meng
"In this uncertain and even chaotic world, we want to assure you that the PAP is alongside to support and care for you.
At the national level, we know that Covid-19 has impacted many. Many of you have shared very openly and honestly with me about your worries, your anxieties about job loss, income loss and the responsibilities of taking care of your parents and your own children. We hear your anxieties – my team and I will do our very best to support you in these challenging times.
We have already brought a job centre to Sengkang and job fairs to help you look for jobs if you need the help."
In Chinese, he said:
"Because of Covid-19, Singapore is now facing the worst crisis since its founding. We will do our best to make sure no one is left behind."
Lam Pin Min
"I know that life has not been always easy, especially during this Covid-19 crisis. I know that it is especially difficult for young families, many of whom are in the sandwiched class. I know that there are many such families in Sengkang...
We are here to support you. Our job is to take care of things in the community. Our job is to help ease your burden as much as possible. Our job is to continue making improvements to make your life better."
Amrin Amin
In Malay, he said:
"My dear brothers and sisters, we are in a very worrying crisis. There are many who have been fired from their jobs or had their wages cut...We will help you improve your skills, find a job and earn a good income so you can better support your family. There is so much we can do together."
2. Promised new facilities for residents
Ng Chee Meng
"If we are elected, the first thing we will do, is to form a Sengkang Together Movement to co-develop our Sengkang town together. As part of this, we will set up a new Sengkang Town Council, to better serve your municipal needs."
Raymond Lye
"The new town council will also strive to give Sengkang town its own unique identity. We will improve on connectivity and integration within Sengkang, build more and better communal facilities like playgrounds, fitness corners, covered linkways, drop-off porches and the like. We will also pay special attention to our seniors, with more senior activity centres, barrier-free access routes and residents’ corners.
There are many new developments to look forward to in Sengkang. Two integrated commercial hubs, Anchorvale Village, with its hawker centre and neighbourhood centre, and the Buangkok Integrated Hub, with its mall and community club, are being built. The soon-to-be completed Rivervale Community Club will open in early 2021. Compass One and Rivervale Mall are also being revamped.
We will soon welcome a water-themed playground to Anchorvale and a $2 million community sports hub to Rivervale. I am sure our kids and fitness buffs will look forward to them."
Lam Pin Min
"We welcome our Sengkang General Hospital into our Kampung, so that acute and specialist healthcare are more accessible to you and your family. We will have more senior care and fitness centres, and more wellness programmes. We want you to age gracefully and with dignity.
Looking forward, we will also welcome the water theme park to Sengkang. I am certain our young Sengkang residents will love and enjoy it."
Amrin Amin
In Malay, he said: "We are here to help, so we will set up a Career Centre at Sengkang Community Club."
