A 53-year-old man was sentenced to six months' jail for repeatedly stripping naked at Darul Aman Mosque in Eunos.
According to Today, Djamaludin Supadi had also punched a police officer and damaged a kentong, a type of drum used to call a congregation to prayer in the mosque.
The incident occurred on Mar. 3 before all mosques in Singapore were closed as a precautionary measure to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.
Took some pills called "Power"
Today reported that Djamaludin had apparently taken some pills which were called "Power".
He bought the pills in Geylang and claimed that they gave him extra energy.
On Mar. 3 afternoon, Djamaludin went to Darul Aman Mosque to perform his prayers.
He stated that he had seen and heard an angel. In addition, he also felt "extreme power".
Damaged a kentong
Upon entering the mosque, Djamaludin went into a cordoned off area and picked up the mosque's kentong.
He swung the kentong around and fell down. The kentong also fell and was damaged from the impact.
Djamaludin then rolled around on the floor.
Stripped naked
After a while, he stood up and stripped naked before laying on the ground again.
Soon after that, he wore his underwear again.
An imam (prayer leader) witnessed the incident and alerted the mosque’s operations and facility officer.
The officer attempted to ensure that Djamaludin kept his clothes on.
However, Djamaludin stripped naked again.
The officer tried to use a sarong to cover Djamaludin's private parts.
At that point, a worshipper at the mosque called the police for help.
He told the police, according to Today: "Got one Malay man naked, opening everything. I see also, I cannot take it."
Punched a police officer
Three police officers arrived and tried to console Djamaludin.
However, he stood up, spewed vulgarities and punched one of the officers' ribs.
As he was handcuffed, Djamaludin also struggled violently.
Later on, two foldable knives and three penknife blade refill cases were found on him.
Djamaludin claimed that they were for his previous work as a kitchen helper.
However, his former employer clarified that this was untrue.
Djamaludin was unemployed at the time of the incident.
In mitigation, he claimed that he was in an unstable state after losing his job.
He also stated that the pills he took caused him to hallucinate.
Another incident at a mosque
A separate incident also took place at a mosque on Jan. 19, 2020.
A 35-year-old gravedigger, Fadhil Yusop, entered the main prayer hall of Al-Mawaddah Mosque in Sengkang with a 22cm knife.
He then threatened a religious officer who was conducting a religious class with about 100 students.
When the police arrived, Fadhil claimed that he had heard voices instructing him to go to the mosque.
He was sentenced to nine months and two weeks’ jail, reported Today.
