The Ministry of Health (MOH) confirmed 486 new cases of Covid-19 infection on May 11, 2020.
This brings the total number of reported cases in Singapore to 23,787.
MOH reduced the total number of cases by 35 after 33 tests were found to have given false positives, while two other tests were equivocal and later verified to be negative upon re-testing.
Breakdown of cases
Here is a breakdown of the new cases:
- Imported cases: 0
- Cases in the community: Three (Two Singaporeans/Permanent Residents, One Work Pass)
- Work Permit holders (residing outside dormitories): Two
- Work Permit holders (residing in dormitories): 481
MOH added:
"The lower number of cases today is partly due to fewer tests being processed at a testing laboratory as it is recalibrating its apparatus for one of the test kits."
2 additional deaths
MOH reported that a 68-year-old male Singapore citizen passed away due to complications related to Covid-19.
MOH also reported that a 53-year-old Indian national with Covid-19 passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest. The cause of death is ruptured myocardial infarction due to coronary thrombosis.
3 new clusters
MOH also announced three new Covid-19 clusters on the same day:
- Tuas South Apartments
- 47 Senoko Drive
- 566 Woodlands Road
504 cases discharged, 24 cases in ICU
A total of 1,093 confirmed cases remain in hospitals, while 19,448 are isolated and cared for at various community facilities.
504 more cases have been discharged, bringing the total number of discharged cases to 3,225.
A total of 24 cases are in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
33 false positives discovered from previously reported cases
Additionally, 33 individuals were discovered to have falsely tested positive for Covid-19 on May 10, following second-round tests in a national lab:
Of the 33, three were Singapore Expo care facility workers:
- A Singaporean radiographer
- A nurse
- A volunteer
The false positives arose from an apparatus calibration issue from one of the laboratories' test kits.
Thankfully, MOH has confirmed that the converse was not discovered: "There were no false negative results discovered from our review."
They also added that immediate action has been taken to rectify the situation.
In addition to the 33 false positive tests, two other test results were equivocal, and were later verified to be negative upon re-testing.
