Animal Crossing: New Horizons has seen quite a few recreations of popular places, such Sentosa Island.
And now, another popular destination has been made.
The iconic fictional universe of Studio Ghibli's "Spirited Away" has been painstakingly recreated in the game, from its familiar characters to its intricate architecture.
Extremely detailed decor
Twitter user Tsukimaro (@HUb0E61kOpP3F0a) started uploading progress pictures and videos of their game in Apr 2020.
On Apr 23, the user shared a short recording of their character (dressed as the protagonist Chihiro) exploring the island.
Already, familiar rows of food stalls can be spotted.
Over the next few weeks, Tsukimaro continued to expand the "Spirited Away" universe, adding familiar locations such as the bathhouse and Yubaba's office.
A customised shirt was used to create the spirit No-Face, as well as other creatures from the world:
More characters began to make their appearances too, such as dragon boy Haku:
And the witch Yubaba:
For larger creatures such as Haku's dragon form, the designer managed to capture their likeliness by using canvases in the game.
Scene-by-scene retelling of the movie
"Spirited Away" tells the story of 10-year-old Chihiro as she navigates a world of supernatural creatures to save herself and her parents.
On May 16, using the costumes and sets built, Tsukimaro began uploading pictures of their character, still dressed as Chihiro, acting out the movie.
This even includes speech bubbles, presumably the storyline's dialogue.
Here's the movie so far, retold in Animal Crossing.
First, we see Chihiro exploring the island with her parents (who are recreated using clothing mannequins).
Chihiro then enters the spirit realm and meets Haku.
Haku leads her across a bridge and into the bathhouse boiler room.
Chihiro is brought to Yubaba's office, who offers her a job.
Haku meets Chihiro the next day and brings her to the pigpen where her parents are.
Back at the bathhouse, Chihiro helps to wash a rather dirty river spirit.
After the river spirit leaves, No-Face begins to tempt a bathhouse worker with gold.
As No-Face begins to gorge himself on food and workers, Chihiro discovers an injured Haku in his dragon form.
After ignoring No-Face, Chihiro heads to Yubaba's office where she meets Boh, Yubaba's son.
After discovering Haku's curse, Chihiro plans to visit Yubaba's twin sister to help break it, but not before helping No-Face.
Chihiro and her friends travel to meet Zeniba, who helps to break the curse.
Now recovered, Haku picks Chihiro and her friends up, and flies them back to the bathhouse.
Other Ghibli characters
Other than the "Spirited Away" universe, Tsukimaro also created characters and scenes from other Ghibli films.
With "Kiki's Delivery Service", the user recreated the titular character and her friend Tombo, as well as the different locations in the film.
Characters from "Howl's Moving Castle", "Ponyo", and "Princess Mononoke" have also been created.
Create your own
If you'd like to make your own Studio Ghibli island, Tsukimaro has shared their codes for the different outfits and character designs they've made.
Here's Jiji from "Kiki's Delivery Service" and the Kodama from "Princess Mononoke" as shirts:
Similarly, Markl and the Witch of the Waste from "Howl's Moving Castle" have been recreated as dresses.
And if you'd like a couple of Totoros on your island, here they are as outfits too:
