Covid-19 takes a serious toll not only on healthcare services and the economy, but also on our mental health.

To help Singaporeans going through hard times, the government will set up a national hotline that will offer psychological and emotional support as the entire country battles the crisis.

Support from professionals

Minister for Social and Family Development Desmond Lee said in a Facebook post on Apr. 5 that the hotline will offer support to anyone -- children, youths, adults and families.

CARE officers, comprising psychologists, social workers, counsellors and other professionals with the relevant skills and experience will help link callers to social service agencies, or other services.

Lee said:

"As we roll out support measures to provide financial assistance quickly (details at go.gov.sg/msf-covid19-support), the psychological well-being and resilience of our people at a time of crisis is something that we are watching over carefully, especially amongst the more vulnerable in our community."

More locals undergoing distress

Local advocacy group AWARE Singapore noted in an Instagram post on Apr. 5 that it recorded the highest ever number of calls in a month, 619, in Mar. 2020.

It said that there was a "sharp uptick" in the individuals suffering from emotional and psychological distress and abuse.

Unprecedented times for Singaporeans

Lee acknowledged that stress from Covid-19 could take many forms, such as marital and family tensions, or fears over finances. He added:

"These are difficult and unprecedented times for Singaporeans. The COVID-19 situation has disrupted many of our daily routines. Many are losing their jobs or face income cuts, and tensions may rise in some families."

This National CARE hotline will complement existing efforts by public sector CARE officers helping those currently under Quarantine Order or serving a Stay Home Notice.

Lee also called on registered professionals and organisations with relevant experience to register their interest in contributing to the hotline at this link.
