Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong congratulated Muhyiddin Yassin on becoming Malaysia's eighth prime minister.
Muhyiddin was sworn in as prime minister at about 10:33am on Sunday, March. 1
First met Muhyiddin in 1985
Writing on Facebook a couple of hours after the ceremony, PM Lee said he first met the Bersatu president in 1985.
PM Lee was accompanying then-Minister for Trade and Industry Tony Tan to Kuala Lumpur for an ASEAN Economic Ministers' Meeting.
He said Muhyiddin, who was the Deputy Minister in the Malaysian Ministry of Trade and Industry at that time, had received them at the airport.
PM Lee added they have had many opportunities to work with Muhyiddin since, both at the Federal level in his various Cabinet appointments, and when he was Menteri Besar of Johor, a post he held for nine years.
Singapore's relations with Malaysia will grow under Muhyiddin's leadership
PM Lee said he is "confident" that Singapore's "long-standing and multi-faceted relationship with Malaysia" will grow under Muhyiddin's leadership, which will benefit both Singaporeans and Malaysians.
He added that he has invited Muhyiddin to visit Singapore soon, and that he looks forward to meeting him again.
He said: "We will have much to discuss, especially in this challenging global environment."
