Malaysia's new Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has unveiled his new cabinet lineup for the Perikatan Nasional (National Alliance) government.
The government had gained power after the 21-month-old Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration was dissolved on Feb. 24 following the withdrawal of 25 Members of Parliament (MPs) from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and 11 MPs from the People's Justice Party (PKR).
New structure
According to Malaysiakini, the lineup of the senior ministers are as follows:
- International Trade and Industries Minister: Azmin Ali, deputy minister Lim Ban Hong (to be appointed senator)
- Defence Minister: Ismail Sabri Yaakob, deputy minister Ikhmal Hisham Abdul Aziz
- Works Minister: Fadillah Yusof, deputy minister Shahruddin Bin Md Salleh
- Education Minister: Mohd Radzi Md Jidin Timbalan, deputy minister I Dr Mah Hang Soon (to be appointed senator) and deputy minister II Muslimin Bin Yahaya.
Muhyiddin added that the appointment of these ministers means that the post of Deputy Prime Minister will be removed as it is no longer needed.
These four ministers will also be able to chair meetings in the event that Muhyiddin is not in the country.
Quoting a source, The Star said the new structure "very much mirrors the Singapore cabinet".
Before announcing the new cabinet lineup, Muhyiddin had a meeting with Members of Parliament (MPs) at the prime minister's resident at about 3pm on Monday, Malaysiakini reported.
He had presented the list of the new cabinet lineup to the Malaysian king for his consent at 11am on the same day.
