Wing Seong Fatty’s Restaurant in Burlington Square at Bencoolen Street will close its doors after 100 years of operation.

In a statement on Facebook, the restaurant said it will cease operations on Jun. 28, 2026.

History

The establishment was founded in 1926 at Albert Street by the grandfather of the current owners.

He initially called the place "Wing Seong Restaurant".

The place was then passed to his son.

This second generation owner, who is the father of the current owners, was “affectionately known for his stout build”.

Customers referred to him as “Fatty”.

Over time, the name Wing Seong Fatty’s became synonymous with the restaurant.

In 1987, the restaurant relocated to Albert Complex, where its third generation of owners managed the business.

In October 1999, the establishment moved to Burlington Square.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Wing Seong Fatty’s Restaurant.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the restaurant was known for serving staff from the Australian carrier, Qantas and was a familiar name with those in the aviation sector.

Reason for closure

In its statement, the establishment explained that its “shareholders and management are advancing in age, and the younger generation has pursued their own careers”.

The family-owned business found itself “without a successor to continue the business”.

The statement read: “We extend our heartfelt thanks for your loyalty, patronage, and friendship over the past century. It has truly been our privilege to serve you. Thank you.”
