Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has drawn flak online after being pictured drinking from plastic cups as he partied with girlfriend Katy Perry at music festival Coachella.
Trudeau had banned single-use plastics in Canada while in office.
The 41-year-old singer had posted on social media of the couple partying at the festival and sipping from red Solo cups.
Called a hypocrite
Trudeau had vowed in 2019, when he was in office, that Canada would ban single-use plastics in the face of plastic pollution.
The ban came into effect in December 2022 and included checkout bags, cutlery, straws, and food-service ware made from or containing plastics that are hard to recycle, with a few exceptions for medical reasons, reported CNBC.
People online are now calling the former prime minister a "hypocrite".
One wrote on X: “Remember when Justin Trudeau banned plastic bags and straws for Canadians to ‘save the planet’? Now he’s posting pics using solo cups. Rules for thee, but not for me."
Trudeau resigned as Canada's prime minister in early 2025 and went public with Perry in October 2025.
He separated from his wife of 18 years back in August 2023.
