WhatsappU.S. First Lady Melania Trump will chair the UN Security Council meeting on Mar. 2, against a backdrop of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, according to the White House.

The announcement was made prior to the outbreak of Israel and the U.S.'s strikes on Iran on Feb. 28.

Reuters reported that Trump will emphasise education as a way to advance tolerance and world peace in her remarks at the meeting, titled "Children, Technology, and Education in Conflict," her office stated.

It would be the first time a spouse of any serving world leader has chaired a meeting of the 15-member Security Council.

A UN spokesperson said it showed "the importance that the United States feels towards the Security Council and the subject at hand".

The U.S. has taken over the monthly rotating presidency of the Council for the month of March, though U.S. president Donald Trump has long been a critic of the UN since his first term at the White House, calling it ineffective and in need of reforms.

The U.S. is billions of dollars behind in its contributions to the U.N. budget, reported Reuters.
