WhatsappA duck egg vendor in Cambodia watched her trays of eggs get smashed by a female driver whose car she had accidentally hit, after being unable to pay the demanded US$30 (S$38) in compensation.

The incident sparked widespread outrage online and discussions on the treatment of the working class in Cambodia.

Incident

According to Sinchew Daily, the incident occurred in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Feb. 27.

While travelling alongside the female driver on a three-wheeled motorcycle, the duck egg vendor accidentally hit the car's right rear door, causing minor damage.

The driver then demanded about US$30 (S$38) in compensation, but the vendor was unable to pay the full sum as she only had US$20 (S$25) on hand.

She reportedly asked the driver to wait while her father, who was two hours out from the scene, brought the money, but was denied.

The driver then began throwing the trays of duck eggs in the vendor's cart onto the ground, claiming that the broken eggs were compensation.

A now-viral clip of the incident showed the vendor squatting down with her hands clasped together, in a pleading motion.

Cambodian journalist Sovann Rithy highlighted the incident in a video, which shows the driver, clad in white, emptying dozens of duck eggs onto the road.

Calling it a "sad story", he said the vendor had made an unintentional mistake and that the situation could have been avoided with more understanding from both parties.

Netizens also took to the internet to condemn the driver's behaviour, saying that trampling on the dignity of working-class people showed her complete lack of basic moral principles.

Phnom Penh police said they have since contacted the driver, according to Sinchew.
