A 36-year-old man was charged in court on Feb. 10 after he allegedly fled from police during a routine check and drove dangerously against the flow of traffic in the city area.

The incident occurred at about 1:50 am on Sunday (Feb. 8), when officers conducting anti-crime patrols along Coleman Street signalled for the driver to stop.

Instead, he purportedly refused to comply and sped off, putting officers at risk.

Collided with taxi, drugs found

According to the police, the man allegedly drove his vehicle against oncoming traffic and later collided with a taxi before continuing to flee.

No injuries were reported as a result of the collision.

The vehicle was later found abandoned along Central Boulevard in Marina Bay, where officers allegedly discovered items believed to be controlled drugs.

Three charges

Following ground enquiries and the use of images from police cameras, officers from the Central Police Division and the Traffic Police established the man’s identity and arrested him later the same day.

The man has been handed three charges, including using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty, an offence that carries a maximum jail term of up to four years.

He also faces a charge of dangerous driving, which is punishable by up to 12 months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to $5,000, or both, and may result in disqualification from driving.

In addition, he is accused of driving while "under disqualification", which may lead to a jail term of up to three years or a fine of up to $10,000.

Police warn against endangering public safety

“We will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly disregard the law.”

In their statement, the police said they take a serious view of motorists who obstruct officers in the course of duty, flout traffic laws or endanger other road users.

Further investigations into the man’s additional traffic-related offences, as well as suspected drug-related offences, are still ongoing.
