A 48-year-old Malaysian man was sentenced to 12 years' jail and 12 strokes of the cane on Feb. 26 for raping a woman in the bushes near Little India MRT station.
According to CNA, Sharveen Chetty had become "sexually attracted" to the woman after spotting her and later pretended to be a police officer before committing the offence.
Approached her as a police officer and threatened to "blacklist" her
Chetty had noticed the woman, who was working as a domestic helper in Singapore, sitting outside the Little India MRT station exit with her friends on Jul. 11, 2022.
He was working under SBS Transit at the station when he committed the offence.
Chetty later put on a cap and a black jacket and took a longer route back to the group to avoid the CCTV cameras.
Pretending to be a police officer, he approached them to ask for their identification documents.
Chetty told the woman follow him to some bushes in a secluded area and started kissing her.
When she tried to resist him, he threatened to have her and her friends blacklisted from working in Singapore.
Chetty then raped and sexually assaulted the woman.
According to CNA, she later returned to her friends, and they lodged a police report afterwards.

Chetty subsequently left Singapore but was arrested upon his return at Tuas Checkpoint on Jul. 14, 2022.
The prosecution initially sought between 11 and 13 years' jail, along with 12 strokes of the cane.

Another rape charge, along with a charge of impersonating a police officer, was taken into consideration for sentencing.
