Thai woman, who died in train & crane crash, was on the way to dad's funeral

A Thai woman, who was returning home to attend her father's funeral, was among the 32 victims of the fatal crash in Thailand involving a passenger train and a construction crane on Jan. 14.

According to Khaosod English, Chananyat Wongchan was commuting home when the construction crane collapsed onto the train in Sikhio Ratchasima.

The death toll has since increased to at least 32 people as at 5pm on Wednesday (Thailand time).

father's death the day before

On Jan. 13, Chananyat had announced her father's passing on social and said she "would be returning home soon".

She later replied to a relative's comment a few hours before the incident that she would make her way home on Jan. 14.

According to Khaosod English, she was seated in the train's second carriage.

Following the crash, Chananyat's boyfriend later confirmed on social media that her body had been found.

He wrote: "From the crane collapse onto the train, I have now found my girlfriend's body. Today is the day my heart is completely broken."

Deaths rose to 32: Thai authorities

The incident, recorded at around 9:45am, occurred along the Bangkok–Nakhon Ratchasima high-speed rail construction corridor between Lam Takhong and Sikhiu district.

A crane at a construction site in Ban Thanon Khot village had fallen onto the train, which was travelling from Krung Thep Aphiwat station in Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani.

Authorities confirmed 32 fatalities, with three people still missing and 66 others injured.

Local rescue teams continued searching the wreckage into the evening, as investigations into the cause of the crane collapse are ongoing.
