A 63-year-old Singapore Permanent Resident (PR) will be charged on Jan. 14 in Johor, Malaysia, after he allegedly taped over his Singapore car plate number.

According to The Star, Kulai police assistant commissioner Tan Seng Lee said the man had presented himself at the Kulai police headquarters with his wife, 67, for investigations.

May be fined up and jailed

On Jan. 2, the man had driven and refuelled a Singapore-registered car with RON95 petrol in Johor.

He had also allegedly covered his car plate number to avoid detection while pumping the subsidised fuel.

He was later identified as a Singapore Permanent Resident (PR).

Tan said that his identification followed a police report on Jan. 4 after videos of the incident became viral.

The man will be charged at the Kulai Magistrate's Court.

If found guilty, he may be fined between RM5,000 (S$1,585) and RM20,000 (S$6,344).

Tan added that the man could also face up to five years' jail.
