India mass wedding leads to chaos & injuries as guests rush for free chips & snacks
When the snacks get more attention than the bride and groom.
A mass wedding ceremony in Uttar Pradesh, India, descended into chaos after guests rushed forward in a stampede-like surge to grab snack boxes and packets of crisps, according to local media reports there and viral footage shared online.
The event, held in Hamirpur district, was part of a government-organised mass wedding programme that provides financial support to underprivileged couples.
Chaos over snacks
The celebration for 383 couples held at a sports ground on Nov. 25 initially appeared orderly, reported NDTV.
However, the situation shifted rapidly once the wedding rituals were concluded and snacks were brought out.

Several guests reportedly fell and were injured during the scuffle and a child was also believed to have suffered burns from spilt hot tea.
Eyewitnesses said that there were no officials there to manage the crowd or bring the situation under control, according to The Indian Express.
Online reaction
The chaotic scene has since drawn widespread attention online, with local social media users expressing shock and frustration over the behaviour.
Others offered a more measured view, pointing to economic hardship as a possible reason for the scramble, while some simply wondered what were the snacks in question that had caused such chaos.
