S'pore motorists to get S$30 off traffic fines from 2026 if they pay within 14 days of notice
To save significant resources for the traffic police.
From Jan. 1, 2026, motorists in Singapore can get their composition fines reduced by S$30 if they pay within 14 days from the date of the Notice of Traffic Offence (NTO).
This condition comes under the new Early Payment Scheme (EPS) introduced by the traffic police from the start of 2026.
Composition fines are offered to motorists who commit traffic offences, allowing them to pay a sum of money to settle the matter without going to court.
Offences such as stopping in a yellow box, giving insufficient warning signals, and making an unauthorised U-turn, typically incur a S$100 composition fine for light vehicles.
The EPS will apply only to locally-registered vehicles that have committed traffic offences with composition fines of S$50 or more.
Motorists will be notified of their eligibility for the scheme through the NTO.
To save resources
The new scheme aims to encourage motorists to pay their composition fines promptly and reduce meritless appeals, the police said in a news release on Dec. 1.
The police believe this new move will save them significant resources and allow them to be reallocated to more critical areas, such as enforcement.
There has been an increasing number of outstanding composition fines and appeals, which have required significant resources.
In 2024, the traffic police issued an average of about 6,000 NTOs and processed more than 1,000 appeals per month.
Most of the appeals were rejected as the traffic police would only accede to appeals in exceptional circumstances, such as if there was a medical emergency, and with supporting documentary proof.
For a motorist to enjoy the S$30 discount under the EPS, the traffic police must receive the payment within 14 days.
There will be no extension of the 14-day deadline. After 14 days, the full composition fine will apply.
