5 foreign men rob & beat up Bangladeshi man in S'pore, accused him of stealing e-scooter
One of the attackers has been sentenced to two years and nine months in prison, and two strokes of the cane.
Five foreign men were charged in Singapore after they attacked and attempted to rob a Bangladeshi of S$1,000 on the evening of Feb. 12, 2024.
One of the assailants, 30-year-old Bangladeshi national Sarker Sumon, was sentenced on Nov. 13, 2025, to two years and nine months in prison, and two strokes of the cane, backdated to Feb. 14, 2024.
Accused of stealing an e-scooter
According to court documents seen by Mothership, the victim, 40-year-old Hossain Billal, cycled from his residence towards Kallang Stadium at around 5pm that day to have a rest at the riverside.
When he crossed the underpass of Merdeka Bridge, he noticed a bicycle lock that looked to have been discarded, and picked it up.
Suddenly, a man named Pramanik Shamim appeared from behind Billal and accused him of stealing his electric scooter and bicycle lock.
He snatched the lock from Billal and demanded S$1,000 as compensation.
When Billal denied stealing anything and refused to pay, Pramanik used the bicycle lock to strike him.
Subsequently, the four other men appeared and started punching and kicking him after he still refused to pay.
Pramanik used the bicycle lock to hit Billal, while another used a wooden stick.
Despite Billal's pleas, the five men continued to hit him, forcing him to eventually give up his debit card, his phone, and about S$50 cash that he had on him.
Demanded ransom
After taking the items, the five assailants told Billal to call his brother to bring S$1,000 to the underpass as ransom, then continued to attack Billal as they waited.
When Billal's brother arrived at about 7:30pm, he refused to pay the sum and threatened to call the police.
Billal and his brother ran away shortly after and called the police.
A medical report from the hospital later showed that Billal suffered various injuries, including swelling around his head, and bruises on his back, thigh, and arms.
Among the possessions he handed over to his assailants, only his phone was eventually recovered by the police. No restitution had been made to him as of Nov. 12.
The court hearings for the remaining four assailants will be scheduled for future dates.
