Hong Kong boy, 12, falls to death at home while parents on holiday in Macau

A 12-year-old boy in Hong Kong, who was home alone, fell to his death while his parents were visiting friends in Macau.

China Press reported that the incident occurred on the evening of Oct. 26.

The boy was found dead at Cheung Hong Estate in western Hong Kong's Tsing Yi island.

Police report

According to Sing Tao News, a passer-by discovered the boy unconscious on the building's third floor at around 8pm on Oct. 26.

The passer-by then called the police.

Paramedics confirmed the boy died at the scene.

Based on preliminary police investigations, the boy may have fallen from a unit.

Sing Tao News reported that the police did not find a suicide note.

Declined trip

Prior to the boy's death, his parents left at around 3pm on Oct. 25 to visit friends in Macau.

They had supposedly asked their son to join them, but he declined.

When they returned to Hong Kong, they were informed that their son had fallen to his death.

They rushed to the scene to identify his body.

Arrested

The boy's mother Cui, and father Yu, were arrested on suspicion of child or youth abuse or neglect.

Cui, 42, and Yu, 44, admitted during the police investigation that they were not home at the time of the incident and left for Macau without their son.

They have been released on bail as the case is pending investigation.

Other suspicions

The police are investigating if there were other people entering or leaving the house at the time of the incident.

They are also looking into the boy's emotional state at that time, according to China Press.

However, some commenters online speculated that a 12-year-old should be old enough to be on his own, according to takungpao.com.

In addition, no suspicious signs have been found at the scene.

Other possibilities including accidents have yet to be ruled out.

The cause of death is under investigation and pending an autopsy.
