Chinese tourist, 21, feared missing in Egypt actually part of criminal group that 'kidnaps' Chinese nationals: Egypt govt
Twist.
A Chinese woman, Chi Guanying, was earlier feared to have gone missing while in Egypt.
Egypt authorities, however, have released a statement saying the woman was actually part of a cyber fraud gang.
According to reports, the Egyptian Ministry of Interior said the group consisted of eight members, including three Chinese nationals.
The woman in the photo appears to have the same tattoo as Chi.
Egyptian authorities arrested the group in a residential apartment in Cairo.
They also seized firearms, knives, stun guns and mobile phones from the apartment.
According to investigations, the gang lures their victims, mostly Chinese nationals, with promises of lucrative job opportunities.
When they arrive in Egypt, however, the gang allegedly kidnaps them and forces them to contact their families in a bid to extract ransom sums from them.
