Ex- M'sia PM Mahathir, 100, in hospital for fatigue after birthday gathering

He went on a tandem bicycle ride around a lake for about nine kilometres at the gathering.

Two-time former Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir Mohamad celebrated his 100th birthday on Jul. 10, 2025.

To commemorate the special occasion, a public picnic and potluck session was held by Putrajaya Lake in Malaysia on Jul. 13 morning, reported New Straits Times (NST).

However, after driving himself to the event and going on a tandem bicycle ride around the lake for approximately nine kilometres, Mahathir apparently became tired and took a rest on a chair before leaving the event early with his wife.

Mahathir was subsequently admitted to Malaysia's National Heart Institute (IJN) at around 10am to rest, Malaysian news outlet Astro Awani reported his aide, Sufi Yusoff.

According to Sufi, while Mahathir was advised to rest at the hospital, his "condition is okay" and is expected to be discharged this evening.

Left event before interacting with attendees

According to The Star and NST, more than 500 individuals, including children, attended the public picnic and potluck session on Sunday.

Upon arriving at the event at 7:45am, Mahathir and his personal security staff went on a tandem bicycle ride around the lake.

After being tired out by the bicycle ride, Mahathir and his wife left the gathering at around 10am without interacting or taking photos with the event attendees.

Mahathir 'not facing any health issues': son

Commenting on Mahathir's condition, his son Mokhzani Mahathir shared that the 100-year-old was "not facing any health issues".

Instead, he was tired because he lacked sleep and was tired from the events on Jul. 12, NST reported Mokhzani as saying.

As such, when Mahathir embarked on the "long ride" on Sunday morning, he "felt a bit fatigued".

Nevertheless, after having some breakfast, which included coffee and some pastries, Mahathir "felt refreshed again", added Mokhzani.
