Feel the pinch when you pay for necessary expenses these days?

From basic expenses such as transportation and groceries, to discretionary spending like dining out and streaming subscriptions, all these expenses inevitably add up, and before you know it, you’re counting the days to your next paycheck.

The good news is, there are ways to maximise your dollars.

The Standard Chartered (SC) Smart Credit Card has added more bonus merchants to reward you with additional cashback.

This refreshed card may help some of you save as you spend.

What’s new?

The SC Smart Credit Card now offers up to 10 per cent cashback for bonus merchants, if you spend S$1,500 and above monthly.

If you don’t spend that much each month, with a minimum monthly spend of S$800, you can still get 8 per cent cashback for bonus merchants.

Good news is that more bonus merchants have also been included this time round.

Here’s a table for you to have an overview of all the bonus merchants after the addition:

What about spending with merchants that are not included in this bonus merchant list?

All other spending will also get you up to 1 per cent cashback.

There is no limit to the amount of cashback you can earn each month through this card.

Furthermore, new applicants can bring home a free Samsonite MODUS Spinner 25” (worth S$610), along with S$100 additional cashback when you apply and spend S$800 within 60 days of card approval.

This promotion is valid from now till Jun. 30, 2025.

How does the SC Smart Card’s cashback work?

The cashback will be credited in the form of 360° rewards points for eligible retail transactions.

The cashback can be redeemed in minimum blocks of 3,200 points for S$10.

Breaking down the math

Wondering if you’ll be able to hit S$1,500? Here’s how I’d go about it.

With a Ya Kun Kaya Toast Set C each morning, the total cost will amount to S$189 per month.

Setting aside S$15 for both lunch and dinner on a weekday, that will add up to S$300 per month.

If you’re like me, and jump at the chance to pay the bill first after dinner with a group of friends, that’s approximately another S$200 every weekend.

Adding S$120 for transport and another S$100 for subscription fees and other expenses, one would have already spent S$1,500 per month and earned at least S$150 cashback in return

Wait, S$150 cashback? Yes, according to this calculator on the Standard Chartered website.

If this card fits your lifestyle, why not consider getting it?

But first, try the calculator too on the website yourself.
