Two men were shot dead in Cheras, Malaysia, just outside Kuala Lumpur on Jun. 17, the second shooting incident in the greater KL area in the past week.

Gang attack?

The New Straits Times reported that the two men were attacked just after midnight on Jun. 17.

They were outside a shopping mall in Cheras, heading towards their parked car, when several helmeted assailants ran towards them and fired several shots at them.

Berita Harian reported that witnesses said the victims were hit in the body and head while the assailants fled in a Perodua Alza, a Multi Purpose Vehicle.

China Press claimed that the two victims were "well-known East Malaysian gangsters" from Sibu and Bintulu in Sarawak.

There had been at least four gunmen who had waited for the victims to appear before attacking them.

It also said both the victims had criminal records, citing police sources, adding that one was involved in a murder case, and that the shooting might have been a gang-related revenge killing.

Sin Chew Daily reported the incident with slightly different details, saying that witnesses confirmed that there were four gunmen, but wearing stockings to mask their identities, not helmets.

The two victims, identified as "well-known Fuzhou Gangsters", were heading to a car near the mall's entrance when the gunmen, who were lying in wait, rushed forward and shot at them.

The gunmen supposedly continued to fire even as the men fell to the ground, firing several more shots before fleeing.

Police from the KL Criminal Investigation Department, the Cheras District Police Headquarters, and the Police Forensics Unit were later seen at the scene.

Second shooting

This is the second shooting incident in the great KL area in the span of a week.

On Jun. 13, a man was killed and two acquaintances injured when they were shot at while at a restaurant in the Brickfields area of KL.

Free Malaysia Today reports that the three men, all locals, were eating with several friends when they were shot at by two men on a motorcycle.

Despite the shooting, workers in the area interviewed in the wake of the shooting appeared non-plussed, with several reporting that life was continuing as normal, and none felt particularly unsafe.
