Former Nee Soon Group Representative Constituency (GRC) Member of Parliament (MP) Carrie Tan is engaged.

In a Facebook reel video on May 16, Tan announced that she had proposed to her boyfriend of seven years, Kevin Teo, on Apr. 26.

Wanted to propose first due to feminist beliefs

The proposal took place at a recital hosted by The Singing Loft, a music school in Singapore, where Tan combined her passion for music with a significant personal milestone.

Tan, 43, wrote in her video's caption: "Watch the video of me breaking another gender barrier with this crazy (not so crazy) thing I did".

In it, she stood before an unsuspecting audience and a surprised partner as she presented the engagement ring to Teo.

The crowd erupted in applause and cheers as Teo, visibly moved, responded with a resounding "yes".

The couple sealed the moment with an embrace, before Tan got on stage to deliver a speech and share the reason to her proposal.

Recounting the early stages of their relationship, she said that Teo had suggested she should be the one to propose, given her feminist beliefs.

"Well, I think it's been seven years and I'm very comfortable," she added, noting that while they had mutually agreed to marry, she wanted to "pop the question anyway" for memories' sake.

Performed love song

The proposal also occurred during the fourth day of campaigning for the 2025 General Election (GE) in Singapore.

Tan humorously acknowledged the timing, saying: "Skipped off on Day 4 of GE for another very serious business."

"Sorry PM Wong, I planned this before you announced the writ. Thankfully I wasn't gonna run for elections!" She wrote.

Tan was one of 20 MPs who chose not to stand for election once more in GE2025.

In the video, she was also seen performing a Mandarin love song before inviting Teo on stage and declaring, "Let’s get married!"

Tan is currently a transformation and healing coach, while Teo is the Chief Technology Officer at the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network.

While the couple has not yet announced a wedding date, Tan's proposal has garnered widespread attention and praise on social media, with many applauding her for challenging gender norms and embracing vulnerability.
