People's Action Party's Yip Hon Weng, who was elected as the Member of Parliament for Yio Chu Kang SMC in 2020, will contest the same SMC again.
This was announced by the Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the candidate introduction on Apr. 19.
In the 2020 election, Yip had defeated the Progress Singapore Party's (PSP) Kayla Low, taking 60.82 per cent of the vote.
Speaking to the press, Yip shared some of the initiatives such as a new AWWA Senior Care Centre at Blk609, and the estate becomes the first fully-dementia friendly neighbourhood.
Yip also said that he filed 500 questions in Parliament to raise a variety of concerns he gathered from the ground, ranging from cost of living issues to bus service improvements.
Yip hopes to continue to serve residents with conviction if he gets elected again, and he said:
"It is my conviction that policy must always connect back to people and have remained engaged and walk the ground as we face a more complex and uncertain world. The question is not who makes promises, but who walks the journey with you, who builds trust, who stays the course? If I'm trusted with your mandate and yet again, I will continue to serve with clarity, courage and compassion for Yio, for you, for future that leads all of us together."
Potential opponent
Yip is likely going up against Michael Fang from the People's Alliance for Reform (PAR).
Fang is a member of the Peoples Voice (PV) party, one of the three opposition parties that makes up the PAR coalition.
Fang, who teaches in a private college, announced that he would be contesting in Yio Chu Kang SMC as a candidate on Apr. 12, according to CNA.
Fang said he had heard residents' concerns about cost of living, and hopes to propose new changes in parliament, including lower GST (Goods and Services Tax) for consumers and businesses.
