The Singapore People's Party (SPP) will be fielding its treasurer Williiamson Lee in Potong Pasir SMC in the upcoming General Election.

The news was announced by SPP secretary-general Steve Chia in a media statement on Tuesday, Apr. 22.

Lee, 46, had contested Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC in the 2020 election and garnered 32.74 per cent of the vote against the People's Action Party (PAP) team.

Multi-cornered fight

A multi-cornered fight is expected in Potong Pasir SMC.

The People's Alliance for Reform (PAR) previously expressed its interest to contest in the constituency this coming election.

Chia previously told the media that SPP was in discussion with PAR to avoid a three-cornered fight in the constituency.

On Apr. 18, PAR secretary-general Lim Tean told the media they would be fielding 14 candidates in seven constituencies in the 2025 General Election.

PAR has yet to announce who they will be fielding in the Potong Pasir SMC.

Potong Pasir SMC

Lee will be contesting against PAP's Alex Yeo, who will be replacing incumbent Sitoh Yih Pin, who had served in the Potong Pasir SMC for three consecutive terms since the 2011 General Election.

Prior to that, Sitoh had lost twice — in 2001 and 2006 — to opposition politician Chiam See Tong, who had represented Potong Pasir SMC since 1984.

In 2011, Chiam left his Potong Pasir seat to run in Bishan-Toa Payoh, but he lost to the PAP.

His wife, Lina Chiam contested Potong Pasir SMC but lost to Sitoh by 114 votes.

For the first time since 1984, the SMC was retaken by the PAP and it has remained as such since.

"Steadfast member"

In a statement to the media, Chia said that Lee has been a "steadfast member" of SPP.

"His experience, dedication, and deep understanding of the issues that matter to Singaporeans make him an outstanding choice to represent Potong Pasir," Chia said.

Having spent years walking the ground and interacting with residents, the SPP secretary-general said that Lee is "deeply rooted in Potong Pasir".

"We are confident that with your support, Williiamson will continue the legacy of sincere, people-first leadership in Potong Pasir."
