Former MacPherson SMC Member of Parliament Tin Pei Ling and new face Diana Pang will stand in the People's Action Party's (PAP) candidate line-up for Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC.

The other members of the five-member slate are Minister for Manpower Tan See Leng, Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng, both Marine Parade incumbents, and former Nee Soon MP Faishal Ibrahim.

South East District Mayor Fahmi Aliman, who previously represented the Geylang Serai ward, will step down.

New members

Speaking at an Apr. 19 candidate introduction session at the PAP Marine Parade branch, Tan said that five years ago, "we pledged to serve our GRC with heart, purpose, with resolve."

Since 2020, the team has "worked tirelessly" to improve the everyday lives of residents by upgrading infrastructure and improving connectivity.

He spoke of being grateful and appreciative of the support shown by the residents and the privilege of serving in their GRC.

With the GRC's "expanded" boundaries, Tan said he "humbly seeks(s)" a "strong mandate" from the voters to continue to serve the community.

The team is expected to face off with the Workers' Party and the National Solidarity Party, both of which have staked their claims in the constituency.

Tin Pei Ling

Tin, whose former MacPherson SMC was absorbed into the Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC in the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) report, described it as a "homecoming" for her.

She spoke of her 14 years' experience and bonding with the residents of MacPherson despite a less-than-easy start.

"It wasn't a very easy start for me back in 2011 but my residents in MacPherson, my team there in MacPherson, accepted me and gave me the opportunity to serve, and because of that, I've been able to journey this over the past 14 years."

Diana Pang

Pang, a business development director, said she has spent over 20 years volunteering on the ground, mostly in East Coast and Bishan.

She said she hopes to be a voice for the residents, not just to listen to them, but also to act.

Former members

While Tan confirmed that Fahmi would not be part of the PAP's line-up for Marine Parade-Braddell Heights, the final decision on whether he would be fielded at all will be made "on Nomination Day itself".

He also addressed questions on former Marine Parade MPs Edwin Tong and Tan Chuan-Jin.

Tong's Joo Chiat ward was carved out of Marine Parade and into East Coast in the recent Electoral Boundaries Review Committee report, while Tan Chuan-Jin resigned in 2023 after an affair with fellow PAP MP Cheng Li Hui.

On Tong's departure, Tan See Leng said that the Joo Chiat residents would "continue to significantly benefit from his leadership as their incumbent MP".

Whereas on Tan Chuan-Jin's departure, Tan See Leng said that while it was a "pity" that he was unable to finish his term, the work in the estate remains uncompromised.

This, he added, is thanks to the work of the grassroots volunteers — who he called the "unsung heroes".

"Many a time you see a Member of Parliament, the advisor, the political office holders in front. But a lot of the work at the back is done by our unsung heroes," he said.

"So I don't think that with the departure of Mr Tan, notwithstanding the fact that it's a pity, but still — all of the efforts, all of the initiatives....continue. So there's not been any gap, or any loss."
