PAP's Cheryl Chan retires from politics after serving 2 terms in Fengshan
She wishes to spend more time with her family.
Former East Coast GRC Member of Parliament (MP) Cheryl Chan announced on Apr. 21 her retirement from politics.
Posting on Facebook, Chan said that while the decision was a difficult one, it was made after careful consideration.
One of her reasons for leaving politics is to spend more time with her family.
"It had been challenging since my father was ill in 2022. After his passing a year ago, I decided to give time to my family."
Grateful to residents, volunteers
Reflecting on her journey as an MP, Chan, who was elected in 2015, expressed her gratitude to residents.
"I am very grateful to Fengshan and East Coast residents who gave me this opportunity to serve.
Your care and concern, suggestions and feedback made possible what we have in the community today.
You gave me the chance to raise topics of concerns in Parliament, through various feedback channels to the Government and constantly made me think of what can be improved."
Chan also thanked her volunteers, community partners, and donors for making a difference "in what I cannot possibly do as an individual".
"Let me say my heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who has been on this journey with me.
Your care, love and support got me going in the toughest time.
These shared moments and thoughts will always stay with me. Fengshan will always be home to me and have that special place in my heart."
Unclear who PAP will field in East Coast GRC
The 48-year-old group chief strategy and sustainability officer at ST Engineering was deployed in Fengshan Single Member Constituency when she made her political debut in 2015.
Back then, she won the seat with 57. 5 per cent of the vote.
In the 2020 General Election, Fengshan SMC was subsumed into East Coast GRC.
The PAP East Coast team, comprising DPM Heng Swee Keat, Tan Kiat How, Jessica Tan, Maliki Osman, and Chan, won with 53.39 per cent of the vote.
It is unclear who the PAP will be fielding in East Coast GRC in this election.
On Apr. 16, the PAP presented a website that showcases what has been done in East Coast and what residents can expect in the future.
