Millions of people across the U.S. took to the streets in protest against President Donald Trump, the largest show of opposition since the president took office in January.

"Anywhere we can make sure they hear us"

The Hands Off! protests were held in over 1,400 locations across all 50 U.S. states on Saturday (Apr.5), CNN and AP News reported.

The demonstrations were held at state capitols, federal buildings, congressional offices, Social Security headquarters, parks, and city halls.

"Anywhere we can make sure they hear us," the organiser said on their website.

According to BBC, the protests were also held outside of the U,S,, including in London, Paris, and Berlin.

Hands Off!

The Hands Off! demonstration is a response to Trump and Elon Musk's "hostile takeover".

"We are facing a national crisis. Our democracy, our livelihoods, and our rights are all on the line as Trump and Musk execute their illegal takeover," they wrote.

The event website said that Trump and Musk are assaulting social security, healthcare, and human rights, among other things.

The movement said it is committed to non-violence and expects all participants to "de-escalate any potential confrontation".

AP News said that the rallies appeared peaceful, and there were no immediate reports of arrests.

Three months after Trump took office

The nationwide demonstrations took place just over three months after Trump took office and days after the president announced the U.S. would impose import tariffs on most countries.

Trump calls his tariffs "reciprocal" because the U.S. wants to mirror tariffs that other economies place on American-made products, although many of the countries hit with the tariffs do not impose tariffs on U.S. exports.

Since taking office, Trump has expressed his intention to cut federal spending.

In Trump and Musk's move to downsize the federal government, thousands of federal workers were laid off or issued immediate termination notifications.

New York Times's tracking of Trump administration's major moves indicates that the president had cut billions of funding from state health services and dismissed thousands of employees under health agencies.

He also suggested that federal judges be removed from cases examining Trump administration policies.

Trump's approval rating this week fell to 43 per cent, the lowest since he returned to office, according to a Reuters poll.
