In November 2024, a 36-year-old Singaporean man engaged in a fierce argument with his wife after she found out that he had caused another woman to undergo an abortion.

However, when the man saw one of their young daughters playing with her toys on her bed, he brought her to the kitchen and held up a knife, threatening to blind her, reported Shin Min Daily News.

After his wife stopped him and asked their daughter to hide in her room, the man continued quarrelling with his wife and even threatened her that he would kill their four children and her before taking his own life.

The next morning, he also threatened to throw one of their young daughters from the 14th-floor window after his wife sent him a screenshot of his conversation with the woman he had an affair with.

After their argument ended, the man's wife sought help from a family service centre, and an employee there alerted the police, leading to the man's arrest.

The man was recently sentenced to 16 months' jail after pleading guilty to three counts of criminal intimidation.

He cannot be named due to a gag order imposed by the court to protect the identity of the victims, namely his wife and two daughters.

Wife wanted a divorce after discovering his affair

According to Shin Min, the man was working as a private-hire vehicle (PHV) driver at the time of his offences.

While driving his vehicle on the evening of Nov. 12, 2024, he received a text message from his wife, asking if he had caused another woman to undergo an abortion.

As the man realised that his wife must have already known about his affair, he decided to come clean with her.

In response, his wife immediately indicated her intention to divorce him.

Although the man tried to explain and claimed that he had ended his affair, his wife did not believe him.

Threatened to blind young daughter with knife

Upon returning home, the man tried to talk to his wife face-to-face, but the conversation escalated into a fierce argument, reported Shin Min.

At one point, the man noticed that one of their young daughters was playing with her toys in her bed, and he asked her to stop.

However, instead of verbally responding to him, the daughter stared at the man.

Enraged by her attitude, the man picked her up forcefully and brought her to the kitchen, where he grabbed a knife from the sink and threatened to blind her.

In response, his wife dashed over to stop him and pulled their daughter away before asking her to hide in a room and lock the door.

Tried to enter children's room with knife

Later on, the man continued arguing with his wife and even claimed that he wanted to take his own life, reported Shin Min.

At first, he wrapped an electric wire around his neck, but he loosened it immediately afterwards.

He then grabbed his wife's hand, forced her to pick up another knife, and pointed it against his abdomen and throat.

The man told his wife that since their family had shattered into pieces, the entire family ought to die together.

He then fetched two knives from the kitchen and walked towards the bedroom where their children were at.

Although the man kicked the door multiple times and tried to pry the lock with a knife, he failed to open the door.

Held knife against wife's neck

Amidst the chaos, the man's wife had, at one point, tried to seek help from her husband's elder brother, reported Shin Min.

However, when the man found out, he held up a knife again and held it against her neck.

He only let go of the knife and calmed down after he noticed that his wife was too scared to resist.

Threatened to throw young daughter off 14th-floor window

After his wife sent him the screenshot of his conversation with the woman he had an affair with the next morning, the man became so embarrassed that he started arguing with his wife again in the master bedroom, reported Shin Min.

Their argument was witnessed by two of their young daughters, who were also in the room at the time.

At one point during the argument, the man suddenly picked up one of their daughters and threatened to throw her off the 14th-floor window.

Horrified, his wife grabbed their daughter away from the man and asked her to hide.

The man, who was still enraged, subsequently became physical with his wife and even tried to choke her with her left hand at one point.

When the argument finally ended, the wife tried her best to hold back her fear and sent their children to school.

She then visited a family service centre to seek help, and the man's offences came to light following his arrest.

'Deeply sorry' about everything he had done to his family

During court proceedings, the man, who was self-represented, said he was "deeply sorry" for everything he had done to his family, reported Shin Min.

He pleaded for a lighter sentence, stating that he had missed out on many important family moments, such as their children's kindergarten graduation, the first day of their primary school, and their birthdays.

He also wanted to get out of prison as soon as possible so that he could save his marriage and take care of his children.

When delivering the man's sentence, the judge presiding over his case said he must learn to control himself and not unleash his emotions onto his family members.
