Driver, 62, in hit-and-run accident with Shaun Chen's late father arrested
Chen's father was hit by a car while riding home on a motorcycle on the morning of Mar. 28.
The driver, 62, involved in a hit-and-run with Malaysian actor Shaun Chen's father was arrested, as announced by Jelebu police on Facebook on Mar. 30.
The police said the driver had filed the police report himself.
They also said that the driver underwent a urine test, which came back negative, though they did not specify which substances were tested for.
The 46-year-old Malaysian actor Chen, who stars in "The Little Nyonya" spin-off series "Emerald Hill", has since returned to his hometown in Negeri Sembilan for his father’s wake.
Speaking to Mothership in Mandarin, Chen said he did not have any strong feelings towards the driver's arrest and will let the law take its course.
Chen called for driver of the car to step forward and apologise
Three days prior, Chen posted an Instagram video revealing that his father had been hit by a car while riding home on a motorcycle on the morning of Mar. 28.
Footage of the accident, taken from the perspective of another vehicle, showed his father falling onto the ground as a result of the collision, with the car continuing to drive away.
Chen's father passed away afterwards.
The actor had called for the driver of the car to step forward and said he "would not take revenge", only requesting that the driver apologise to his father.
Chen told Mothership he did not feel strongly after hearing about the driver's arrest, and that he just hoped the driver would express remorse for what he did to Chen's family.
However, Chen doesn't believe the driver would.
"It is what it is, let him live this way," Chen said.
"If he has any humanity in him, I believe he'd probably feel quite terrible about what has happened."
Chen said he will leave matters to the police and let the law determine what happens to the driver.
Calls for better medical services in Malaysia
Chen urged those on the road, especially motorcyclists, to be careful on the road.
"Motorcyclists have to be especially careful. There's always the possibility of you getting knocked down or you knocking someone over...it's different if you're in a car. It's easier to get hurt on the road if you're a motorcyclist."
He also called for better and more efficient medical services in Malaysia, saying that his father had been lying on the ground for half an hour before an ambulance arrived, and it took another half an hour before he reached the hospital.
By then, Chen's father missed the golden hour, which is the crucial first 60 minutes after a traumatic injury or medical crisis, which may significantly improve one's survival chances.
Chen added that people at the scene of the accident did not dare to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on his father, which could have potentially changed his father's fate.
Chen's father was cremated at Sendayang Fairy Park Crematorium on Apr. 1, having lived to the age of 84.
