Five passengers aged between 25 and 45 years old were taken to hospital after a lorry carrying migrant workers hit a car and crashed in Punggol on Mar. 1 evening.

Police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) told Mothership that they were alerted to the accident at the junction of Punggol East and Punggol Central on Mar. 1 at about 6:40pm.

The accident involved a car and a lorry, police said.

The lorry driver was arrested for dangerous driving.

The aftermath

A Shin Min Daily News reporter at the scene observed that the car involved stopped in the middle of the road.

The front of the car was badly damaged, with debris scattered across the road.

A road block was set up and a migrant worker was seen directing traffic.

Police and SCDF personnel were at the scene.

They were seen questioning a man believed to be the lorry driver.

A picture taken by a Shin Min eyewitness showed two of the injured workers lying down in the back of the lorry.

Bloodstains were seen on the ground of the lorry and on one of the men's sleeves.

A 33-year-old worker at the scene, Imran, told Shin Min that based on his understanding, the lorry had been driving along Punggol East, but after reaching the junction, it crashed into a car going straight along Punggol Central.

"The driver then lost control of the lorry, and it mounted the kerb before crashing into the fence of our construction site," said Imran.

Driver arrested

Police told Mothership that five lorry passengers, aged between 25 and 45, were conveyed conscious to the hospital.

SCDF said that one passenger was sent to Changi General Hospital and four were brought to Sengkang General Hospital.

Another two persons were assessed for minor injuries but both declined to be sent to the hospital.

Police said a 41-year-old male lorry driver was arrested for dangerous driving.

Police investigations are ongoing.
