Woman, 22, repeatedly stabbed at railway station in Tokyo while livestreaming
A 42-year-old man has been arrested.
A woman in Tokyo, Japan, was found with dozens of stab wounds at a railway station near the popular shopping district Shinjuku on the morning of Mar. 11.
22-year-old Sato Airi had been livestreaming at around 9:50am when a man allegedly stabbed her with a knife, according to local news outlets.
Man located her while watching her livestream
Passersby heard her cries for help, and Kenichi Takano, 42, was later arrested by police for attempted murder.
Stab wounds were found on her neck and chest.
Following Sato’s passing after she was rushed to the hospital, Takano could be charged with murder.
Police said Takano travelled to Tokyo on the morning of Mar. 11 after getting prior notice that she would be live streaming while walking around the city.
He located her while watching the livestream.
The 42-year-old lives in the Tochigi Prefecture, just north of Tokyo.
Alleged financial dispute
Takano claimed that he had a financial dispute with Sato but did not intend to kill her, as reported by The Japan Times and NHK World-Japan.
The two were believed to have become acquainted in December 2021 when Takano began watching Sato’s videos.
He began visiting the restaurant where Sato worked around the summer of 2022.
Takano allegedly lent Sato more than two million yen (almost S$18,000) to cover her living expenses and phone bills.
He also allegedly borrowed money from consumer finance companies.
Witnesses told The Japan Times that Takano appeared to be filming as he kicked Sato.
They added that Takano appeared calm throughout the crime and when he was subsequently arrested.
