A 63-year-old Malaysian woman has been arrested in Nigeria for allegedly attempting to smuggle 31kg of synthetic cannabis into the country, The Guardian Nigeria reported.
Ting Hung Kiong was picked up by operatives of Nigeria's National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on May 17 at the Terminal 2 arrival hall of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos.
According to The Guardian Nigeria, she had flown in from Thailand via Dubai on an Emirates Airline flight, carrying two large travel boxes allegedly containing the drugs, a synthetic strain of cannabis known as Canadian Loud.
Daughter allegedly sponsored the trip
During interrogation, Ting told investigators she works as a caregiver in Malaysia and that her daughter had paid for her travels from Malaysia to Thailand, and subsequently to Nigeria, per Daily Post Nigeria.
According to an NDLEA statement:
"She disclosed that she spent two weeks in Thailand before she was handed the illicit consignment at the Thailand airport to deliver in Nigeria."
Ting's arrest was part of a wider series of NDLEA operations carried out across Nigeria the same week, which netted large seizures of opioids, cocaine, and MDMA at various airports and border crossings, reported The Guardian Nigeria.
