A teacher in the U.S. has been sentenced to jail in Michigan for “disgusting” sex crimes with her former student.
Former student
Jocelyn Sanroman was working as a teacher at Oakside Scholars Charter School in Waterford Township, Michigan, when she had sex with a 16-year-old former student that she had been tutoring, as reported by the New York Post.
Sanroman had recorded the encounters while with the boy at his home. She then went on to confess her actions to a colleague at the school, who reported Sanroman to the school’s officials, leading to a police investigation.
The judge in the case was scathing, calling her actions disgusting and “serious risk-taking behaviour.” At one point, he asked Sanroman “What do you have to say? What were you thinking?”
Sanroman replied that it was “not my best thinking.”
"Error of judgement"
The teacher’s defence attorney claimed that Sanroman had unaddressed mental health issues, saying “she made a tremendous error of judgement.”
The lawyer added that she understood her crime and was “working forward and trying to do her best to become a better person.”
The 16-year-old’s mother wrote a victim impact statement that was read by the prosecutor, in which she said “the lives of her son and that of her family have been changed forever.”
She said that her son had become withdrawn and avoided people out of fear of the attention the case had caused, and she had taken him out of school, instead receiving online schooling.
Sanroman will receive a lifetime placement on Michigan’s sex offender list after pleading guilty.
