They have been arrested.
Four teenagers, two 14-year-old girls and two boys aged 15 and 17, allegedly assaulted a 41-year-old lady ride-hailing driver after failing to pay their fare in Kuala Sungai Baru, Malaysia.
According to local police, the alleged assault occurred at about 12:30am on May 4, New Straits Times reported.
One of the teenagers is still a student.
Four passengers
The driver had apparently accepted a ride request to pick up four passengers in Bukit Rambai and send them to Pekan Kuala Sungai Baru via an e-hailing application.
Upon arriving near a forested area in Kuala Sungai Baru, one of the teenagers asked the driver to stop the vehicle.
The teenagers claimed that they were waiting for someone to transfer money online into their account.
The driver became suspicious and began recording the situation with her mobile phone before the teenagers re-entered the vehicle.
Three of the teenagers suddenly turned aggressive and apparently struck the driver’s head with a blunt object.
One of them also strangled her with a cloth from behind the driver’s seat.
The 15-year-old boy did not re-enter the car and fled the scene during the incident.
The driver was then warned not to resist or call for help.
The woman managed to escape by driving away before lodging a police report.
She sustained injuries to her nose, neck, and both hands during the altercation.
She later received medical treatment for her injuries.
Arrested
The four teenagers have been arrested and remanded until May 20.
Further instructions from the deputy public prosecutor are pending.
The case is being investigated for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means.
In Malaysia, the offence carries a jail term of up to 10 years, or a fine, or whipping, or any two of such punishments upon conviction.
