Motorcycle allegedly hits woman walking along Causeway days after 'No walking' sign put up
Both the pedestrian and motorcyclist were reportedly injured.
A motorcycle allegedly hit a pedestrian as she tried to walk across the Causeway around 9pm on Apr. 14.
The incident happened at the Malaysia side of the Causeway, on the rightmost lane of the road designated for motorcycles going towards the Johor checkpoint, Shin Min Daily News reported.
An eyewitness said the pedestrian was crossing the road when the motorcyclist hit her from behind, resulting in serious injuries.
A Facebook video capturing the aftermath of the incident showed a section of the road cordoned off by traffic police.
A person was partially seen sprawled on the ground.
A few people who appeared to be passersby appeared to attend to the woman.
According to a user on Threads, the pedestrian was a woman, and she was not responsive to her husband when he called out to her after the accident.
The motorcyclist was lying on the ground and bleeding, it was added.
Traffic jam
The collision also caused a traffic jam, as seen in photos shared by the user, as well as several others on social media.
The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said at 9:15pm on Apr. 14 that a traffic accident had occurred along the Causeway after the international boundary leading to Bangunan Sultan Iskandar.
The motorcycle lane was blocked, but the accident was cleared by 9:34pm, the ICA later updated.
Walking prohibited
The accident comes just days after new traffic signs were put up on Malaysia's side of the Causeway to highlight the no walking rule.
Another sign nearby indicated that the speed limit for vehicles was 50km/h.
Johor Stulang assemblyman Andrew Chen said walking along the Causeway has always been prohibited, but it has not been strictly enforced.
No walking signs had been installed previously, but new ones have been designed to make the warning more eye-catching to pedestrians.
Chen said he has repeatedly called for a sheltered pedestrian walkway to be built as a safer alternative for crossing the Causeway, but with no success.
Photos recently shared on social media showed that pedestrian were still walking along the Causeway despite the new sign.
