Investigations are ongoing.
A male student was left with serious injuries after allegedly being run over by a bus on the campus of Chang Gung University in Taoyuan, Taiwan.
On the evening of Mar. 26, a Sanchong Bus Route 967 struck the 20-year-old student surnamed Wang who was walking on a pedestrian crossing on campus, reported Ettoday.
Wang reportedly is in the intensive care unit after sustaining serious injuries.
The general manager of the bus operator, Li Jianwen, told local media that he had apologised to the student's parents and the university that evening and promised to cover all costs.
Police investigating
Local police stated that the driver's blood alcohol level was zero, and he will be prosecuted for negligent driving causing injury.
Sanchong Bus Company also issued a press release stating that the driver, surnamed Liao, failed to comply with the rule of stopping and checking before making a left turn.
The company also stated that after the incident, its supervisors went to the hospital to express their concern and condolences to Wang and his family.
They gave NT$200,000 (S$8,074) as a condolence payment and offered to cover all hospital fees.
The company will require drivers to strictly stop and wait before turning in school zones, and will deploy personnel and AI tools to conduct on-site checks to ensure safer turning and prevent similar incidents.
Online speculation
Some members of the public later claimed online that the driver did not get out of the vehicle after hitting Wang, and instead reversed and moved forward, running him over multiple times and causing severe injuries.
Police said these claims are untrue, based on a review of surveillance footage.
According to the footage, the bus stopped immediately after hitting Wang and running over him with its left front wheel.
He was then trapped under the left rear wheel.
Investigations into the incident and its cause are ongoing.
