M'sian influencer’s handbag snatched by motorcyclist at petrol station, netizens blame her
Netizens said she should have been more aware and asked why she was carrying her bag in plain view.
A Malaysian influencer has shared how she lost her handbag to a snatch thief while refuelling at a petrol station in Selangor.
The incident
The incident occurred on Feb. 10 at a Shell station in Puchong Jaya, according to the Malay Mail.
Footage circulating online showed the woman, with a brown bag slung over her shoulder, refuelling while standing next to a white car.
A motorcyclist in the vicinity then rode past her once, before circling back moments later to seize her handbag and speed off.
The force of the snatch caused her to fall to the ground.
Lost everything
In a post shared on Instagram on Mar. 1, the influencer, who goes by the handle @cabibibi and is also known as “Cabi”, described the incident as a painful lesson in situational awareness.
She said she had stepped out of her vehicle with her handbag to fill up on petrol when a motorcyclist rode past and snatched the bag.
Inside the bag were her mobile phone, wallet, house keys, and even her car keys.
"I lost EVERYTHING," she said.
She reflected that the experience made her realise how quickly everything could be taken away, and urged her followers to remain alert and "don't be so blur like me".
Thankfully, she said a driver in a car behind her came to her aid immediately, lending her a phone and driving her to a friend’s house.
She subsequently lodged a police report. The suspect, however, has yet to be apprehended.
Bruised knee
In a follow-up post, she shared a photograph of her bruised knee, sustained when she fell during the snatch.
Despite the visible injury, she said she was fortunate not to have been seriously hurt.
She later managed to replace her identification card, bank cards, keys and phone within a short period, and expressed gratitude for the support she received from friends and strangers alike.
Online backlash and victim-blaming
But beyond the theft itself, the influencer said she was taken aback by the reaction from some social media users.
In a series of Instagram Stories, she shared screenshots of direct messages and comments that appeared to fault her for carrying her handbag while refuelling.
Some suggested that she should have anticipated the risk.
But other netizens came to her defence, arguing that responsibility lay squarely with the thief rather than the victim.
Some pointed out that critics seemed determined to find fault regardless of the circumstances.
